If you or someone you know has been exposed to asbestos, you might be at risk for mesothelioma. Here are some of the signs and symptoms.
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer which is often caused by exposure to materials containing asbestos.
The fibres of the asbestos are inhaled into the lungs and these microscopic fibres cause damage to the protective lining which covers the many internal organs of the body, also known as the mesothelium. This causes the cells to mutate and transform, developing into a cancer which is usually fatal.
Thousands of people develop this type of cancer every year, even though asbestos has been banned since the 1970s. This is because mesothelioma can take anywhere from 15 to 50 years to develop in the body after the asbestos exposure. The symptoms will not become apparent until after the cancer has developed. Many patients can have asbestos fibres in their lungs for decades before mesothelioma is diagnosed.
Symptoms of Mesothelioma
If you know that you have been exposed to asbestos in the past, such as working in a job where you handled it or being exposed to it in a household environment, you should alert your doctor to the possibility of mesothelioma. The outlook for patients with this disease depends on how early the symptoms are recognized and how aggressive the treatment is.
Most of the symptoms of this disease involve the lungs and throat. You might experience unexplained chest pains and shortness of breath. You might also experience a dry cough or a wheezing sound when you breathe. Some people with mesothelioma also find it difficult to expand their chest fully and take a deep breath.
As the disease progresses, you will start to experience other more serious symptoms including weight loss, more severe shortness of breath, a loss of appetite and night sweats. As a tumor starts to develop in the lungs you might also find that your voice changes and you suffer from throat problems as well.
Treatment Options
At the moment, there are several options available for treatment if you discover that you have mesothelioma or asbestos cancer. This includes chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. Many patients choose to undergo a combination of all or some of these processes. Doctors also recommend a healthy diet, regular exercise and a variety of other alternative therapies.
Legal Options
If you or a loved one has developed mesothelioma as a result of being exposed to asbestos in a workplace or home environment, you could be eligible for compensation.
An asbestos claim for compensation can be pursued against the employer or the employer?s insurance company, even if the company responsible for your exposure is no longer in business.
Even if the exposure did not occur in the workplace it can still be possible to make a claim for compensation against the company or individual responsible. Contact an asbestos claim lawyer for more information.?
